Community Supported Agriculture

A couple of folks have been asking about my CSA Box photo post yesterday, what is it, etc.
A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. Sort of like a Co-op per sea. Basically you can purchase a share of a farm and you get a box of fresh sweet organic produce each week. We just got our first box this week. I am super excited about it. Not sure if many of you know, but I do have some health issues and was basically given an ultimatum - either spend money on organic produce or spend money on medical bills (of which I already have many). So, right then and there I decided to join a CSA and support a local farm. I know folks may want to know about pricing as well, and I will share that with you - we got a medium sized box and it is $24/week. They have a couple other sizes as well, depending on how many people, how often you cook, etc. We are currently supporting Terra Firma Farm in Yolo County.
Last night for dinner I made the following dish:
  • Heirloom Tomato Salad - tomatoes, onion and basil from CSA box, olive oil, salt and pepper
  • Sauteed Summer Squash - summer squash and onion from CSA box, olive oil
  • Brown Rice - organic from California as well
  • 1/4 of the large melon in the photo from yesterday for dessert!

Candy Colored Ribbon

I love the $1 bin at Michael's, sometimes you have to dig, but you are rewarded sweetly!

Holy Smoke!

I am surprised I have not posted about this yet, but gosh it is so smokey all around the Bay Area right now. Reporters and health officials say the air quality in NorCal (from Monterey, CA to the Oregon border) is horrible due to the approximately 800 wild fires that are currently burning. They say it doesn't matter if you are in the same town as the fire or miles away, the air quality is the same...bad. Anyway, we need RAIN NOW!

Weekend Wrap-up

What a nice weekend I had.
Saturday I woke up, took my time getting into the day by reading for about an hour before getting out of bed (finished reading Kabul Beauty School it was awesome!). After lunch a coworker came over and we made some curtains for her bedroom which was super fun. Tim and I went out for Indian Food for dinner, which is always nice.
Sunday, I went to my dear friend Debbie's house and we literally sat and talked for about 6 hours! We never run out of things to talk about. I love that. We planned on watching a movie and it just sat in the DVD player the entire time (which was fine with me). I got home around 7:30 PM and took it easy. Tim and I watched "American Experience" on PBS about Annie Oakley which was incredible! Following Annie we found a documentary on CNBC about Levi Strauss which was also really good so it was a western documentary night at our house.
Well, it has been a crazy Monday. I thought I should make a somewhat regular post since the last couple have been just photos - which is fun too!
I am working tomorrow night - teaching a collage class and then my last night at CG is Thursday. They are closing due to not enough people signing up for classes, etc. I would be bummed, but my day job is sort of taking over so I could use the extra time to myself.

Have a great week!

Otis

My bosses dog, I had to take him out for a "spin" today.

Cool it!

For those of you not in San Francisco, have you heard about the HOT weather here?
It generally does NOT get into the 90's in the city EVER and it has been up there for the last 2 days (at least in Bernal Heights).
Anyway, I thought I would make some cucumber water to cool us down today, it was yummy and hit the spot!

WOW!

I am lucky enough to have beautiful landscaping around my office building which is full of endless photo ops. I knew there was a bee in this flower (I saw him fly in) but the flower was folded over a bit so I adjusted the camera settings, reached over and shot.

Cat Eye

By accident I found a way to make my eye look like a cat without altering the photo.

Photo a Day

OK, so it is going to be a challenge, but I have decided to try and post a photo a day for a month.
Some days I really have nothing to say, or have things to say, but can't really put them on my blog, I am sure I already share way too much.
Sometimes I will have an explaination, sometimes not.
Here we go...

Mehndi

after application, before scrapping off paste
Most of you may know, I learned the art of Mehndi (Henna) a couple of years back and love it! I have been trying to keep Mehndi on my left hand (too hard to do the right since I am right handed) to sort of put myself out there for people who may be interested in getting it done. I have had a couple people at work ask me about it so perhaps I might have some little side jobs soon (fingers crossed). Did you know that Mehndi is known in some parts to ward off the evil eye and protect the wearer? Contrary to popular belief it is not only done in India, Mehndi is done in parts of Africa, the Arab world (Middle East, Morocco, Egypt) and South Asia.
after the scrapping, it could get darker had I left it on longer

...and the City

Saw Sex and the City yesterday with some friends and had lunch afterwards in San Mateo. The movie was great, as I had expected and the 5th girl (the clothing) was sensational! I don't want to give too much away here for those of you who have not seen it.
I am actually going to see it again today with Wendy, who has not seen it yet. I could see it again, there were some great parts and I could look at the clothes forever.
I saw this sign in San Mateo and thought it was cool - you know I always have my camera with me, so I thought why not get this cool sign on film?

Your Never Fully Dressed...

without a smile!
I found this by accident, and had to post about it.
Smile on a Stick - smiling is not that hard, but I know some people I would love to buy these for. Its interesting, I smile at people all day when I pass them in the hall at work and the majority of the time, the look down at the floor after we have made eye contact and they have seen my pearly whites. What is wrong with people?
